The History of the Festival

Art Exhibition at the Umsonst & Draußen Festival

In 1987, the Youth Center Festival of the City of Würzburg took place in Heidingsfeld. Among the visitors was Ralf Duggen, a music enthusiast and band mixer who had moved from Aschaffenburg to Würzburg for his studies. There, he met Hartmut Emser from the city's Youth Office, who was also the singer of the band "Doktor Sommer" and co-organized the festival.

When it became clear that the Youth Center Festival would not continue, Ralf Duggen developed a concept to provide a better platform for local bands. He presented his idea to Hartmut, who immediately showed interest. Without thinking about formalities like employment contracts or payment, they both spontaneously began implementing the project. The official organizer was the City of Würzburg, represented by the Cultural and Social Department.

The first Umsonst & Draußen took place in great weather and was a huge success!

Mozart is unrivalled! He is unsurpassed in his ability to sense everything human. He translates existential being-there and being-so into music. The light and the dark, loneliness and happy fulfilment, the I and the We: the contradictions of human existence are contrasts that Mozart's music thrives on.
